(WASHINGTON – January 24, 2006) – The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) today announced the release of the 2006 Medical Cost Reference Guide (MCRG). Now in its fourth year, the guide is one of the most comprehensive collections of data available from government, academic, and business sources, as well as BCBSA.

Covering topics such as health spending, health information, the prevalence and cost of chronic disease and obesity, trends in hospitals and among physicians, consumers, and the uninsured, the 2006 MCRG provides a valuable resource for researchers, policy-makers, and the media.

Some examples of data include:
60 percent of Americans support the creation of a secure online personal health record.[1]
The percentage of employers offering health benefits has declined from 69 percent in 2000 to 60 percent in 2005.[2]
The share of generic drug prescriptions in the retail market was 46 percent in 2004.[3]
“BCBSA’s 2006 Medical Cost Reference Guide provides timely and relevant information that is invaluable when assessing the healthcare system. In offering all of this important data in one convenient format, the guide supplies important knowledge to drive effective solutions to the challenges facing the healthcare system,” said Scott P. Serota, president and CEO, BCBSA.

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association is made up of 38 independent, locally owned and operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies that collectively provide healthcare coverage for more than 94 million – nearly one-in-three – Americans.
