AmerUs Life was established in 1896. AmerUs Life is a subsidiary of AmerUs Group Co., an Iowa corporation located in Des Moines, Iowa. The Reverend George Breckenridge Peak obtained a charter to do business as the Central Life Assurance Society, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1897, insurance agent W.J. Stewart and several friends in Bancroft, Iowa, created a new fraternal benefit society, the Brotherhood of American Yeomen, which became American Mutual Life Insurance Company. As the decades passed, both organizations experience many changes in leaders, names and organizational structure evolving into strong, secure, modern life insurance companies. In 1994, these two companies merged to become what is now known as AmerUs Life.
