Bankers Life of New York was started as Manhattan Casualty Company for the purpose of servicing health agents of the parent company, Bankers Life and Casualty Company, Chicago, in New York State. It was located at 114 John Street, New York, New York. In November 25, 1958 the Company was reorganized and started business as The Gotham Life Insurance Company of New York. Its president was John F. Sweeny. In 2001 The Company became a part of the AmerUs Group.
Bankers Life of New York is a wholly owned subsidiary of the AmerUs Group, a publicly owned holding company of life insurance and annuity companies. The AmerUs Group, markets, underwrites and distributes a full range of insurance throughout the United States. Bankers Life of New York is the sole AmerUs Life company licensed to conduct business in New York State.
Bankers Life is licensed in 10 states which include Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
