National Life Assurance Company of Canada was founded over a century ago. The Company is a leading provider of individual Life Insurance, Group Life and Health Insurance, and Retirement and Investment Products. The Company is headquartered located in Toronto; it has regional offices across Canada and employs 450 people. National Life was recently recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers.
National Life has experienced dynamic growth in the past few years, climbing to one of the top 10 Canadian life insurance companies, and technology has been a big factor in this growth. In 1997, the company sought assistance from an outside Information and Communication Technology provider, and selected Getronics.
Most Life Insurance companies rely heavily on their ICT infrastructure and National Life is no exception. According to Wilfried Loewrigkeit, National Life, Systems and Services, The systems function in a life insurance company is basically the assembly line. Hence, it is very important that the systems support the business and produces the revenue.
Today, the information technology at National Life supports 450 employees at their Toronto Head Office as well as their regional offices and affiliated brokers across Canada. Brian Wrixon, Vice President, Individual Insurance Sales at National Life sums it up by saying that; the nature of the Life Insurance sale today is complex. Without the computer, they would be lost. It's simply impossible to do this job without a computer.
Over the years, National Life has built their information systems and developed their applications around a mainframe environment. However, due to the increase in Windows based applications, they were under increasing pressure to quickly move to a distributed network environment for their desktop and notebook users. National Life needed to move quickly. They required new skills and faced the challenge of either upgrading their internal skills or looking outside for a partner to help them get there faster. In their search for an ICT partner, they found Getronics.
