Today's AIG Sun America combines the retirement savings businesses of three dynamic organizations into one industry powerhouse. The former Sun America entered financial services in 1971 with the acquisition of Sun Life Insurance Company of America, which was founded in 1890.
In the 1980s the company embarked on its retirement savings growth initiatives, divesting mortality based and other businesses while it assembled a product and service line up that eventually included annuities, mutual funds, guaranteed investment contracts and financial advisory services.
American General Insurance Company, now AIG Annuity Insurance Company, was founded in Texas in 1926, growing rapidly through strategically acquisitions over the past five decades. In the 1972, the company began to focus its expansion efforts on the rapidly growing retirement savings market. American General acquired VALIC, an industry leader in group retirement savings products, in 1977 and Western National Life, the dominant issuer of fixed annuities in the United States, in 1998.
The Company has over the past eight decades grown into the global leader in insurance and financial services, with a market capitalization that ranks it among the top 20 companies in the world. AIG acquired SunAmerica in 1999 and American General in 2001, combining the two companies with the retirement savings business of AIG Life and creating a new industry leader in retirement savings.
