ALEXANDER, SANDRA; MD
Dr. Alexander Sandra has completed her B.S in Biology from Loyola University, Chicago, IL, in 1968 and her M.S from DePaul University, Chicago, IL, in 1972.She has also completed her PhD in Anatomy from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, in 1976 and MD from Carnegie Institution of Washington, Baltimore in 1976-78. She is a fellow of Carnegie Institution of Washington.
She has participated in Gross Human Anatomy for Medical Students and Gross Human Anatomy for Physical Therapy Students.
Their Research Interests/Laboratory Efforts areinterested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which blood-bourne elements cross the endothelial barrier in vascular beds which are tight junction coupled. They have been studying this problem using both in vitro and in vivo systems and have been using a variety of probes including the hormone insulin and iron carrying protein transferring. By combining electron microscopic and immunocytochemical techniques, they have documented other subcellular structures which mediate the transcytosis of these important molecules. Such work is basic to an understanding of how drugs and other therapeutic agents may be targeted to specific tissues.
