Hawkins John is the faculty ofWalnut Creek Medical Center in the department of Mental Health/Chemical Dependency services. Having grown up in Los Altos, California, he has always considered the Bay Area as his home. His father was the C.E.O. at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View and the exposure that he had to his father's work and the hospital fostered his interest in medicine. After graduating from Los Altos High School, he went to the University of the Pacific where he majored in chemistry and biology. After college he did some traveling in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union and went to Argentina twice.

He went to medical school at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, California. Osteopathic medicine emphasizes primary care and treating the whole person. He decided to go into family practice and completed his residency at the University of Nevada, Reno. After residency he moved back to Los Altos and was on the medical staff at El Camino Hospital but his real interest was in psychiatry. He attended the psychiatric residency program at San Mateo County Medical Center.

He has done his medical schooling from College of Osteopathic Medicine of The Pacific. He has done his internship fromPacific Hospital of Long Beach. He obtained his board certification from thePsychiatry, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and Family Medicine, American Board of Family Medicine.

After graduation he took a faculty position at U.C.S.F. the University of California, San Francisco and worked in the psychiatric emergency room at San Francisco General Hospital for ten years. He was an Associate Clinical Professor at U.C.S.F. and enjoyed his involvement in the clinical teaching of medical students and residents. He also had an interest in aerospace medicine so he joined the Air National Guard/ U.S.A.F. Reserves and served as a flight surgeon with the 129th Rescue Wing and was later attached to the 60th Medical Squadron at Travis Air Force Base.

He left UCSF/SFGH to join Kaiser Permanente in 2001. He enjoys working with his colleagues in Walnut Creek and he is very impressed by the integration of medical services and the use of information technology at Kaiser Permanente. He also enjoys spending his spare time with his family, playing the guitar, and skiing.
